2006-08-26, Truxton's American Bistro (CA > Los Angeles > Westchester)
Dan and me (split): deli brisket sandwich = brisket on comfortably heavy whole wheat with baby greens and tomato; side salad was dressed with an excellent pomegranate vinaigrette, neither sweet nor overly acidic
Dan: "playa sunset" = (non-alc.) grapefruit and orange juices with lemon twist
me: mojito
Dan's mother: mojito; sliced turkey breast with cranberry sauce, gravy, mashed potatoes
split three ways: (1) "monkey bread"--white dough, cheddar, lightly fried; (2) "banana wama wama" = two bananas cut widthwise and fried, topped with chocolate sauce, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and a piece of lightly fried, cinnamon sugar-dusted phyllo
Truxton's is a new place on Manchester Blvd, open fewer than six months. When Dan's mother noted that the turkey was too dry, the manager removed it from our bill. Then the dessert was delayed due to a queueing error, so we had that free as well--quite good when it arrived. I added half the dessert's cost back in and fixed the tip to be a decent percentage of the original total. That's the first time I've tipped above 30% voluntarily--the sandwich, drinks, and dessert were well worth it. Though Dan thought his juice cocktail too grapefruity, I found it pleasant against my barely sweetened mojito (nicely limey and quite strong).
New, then, and in need of a little rebalancing top to bottom, but I think they'll grow into themselves well. Their shtick is that the veg is from local farmers, the meat's free-range, etc., yet the prices are fairly sensible. Before the manager tinkered with our bill, we'd have paid a little under $50 for our two entrees, 2.5 bar drinks, single appetizer, and single huge dessert.
While checking whether they've a Web site, I found this Xanga entry. heh.
